Westhoughton has a real mix of housing, from Victorian terraces near the town centre to 1960s semis on the estates and the newer builds around Wingates and Daisy Hill. Whether an air source heat pump makes sense for you depends far more on the house itself than on any general rule. This guide sets out what actually matters before you spend a penny.
A heat pump runs best when it can heat water to a lower temperature than a gas boiler, typically 40 to 50 degrees rather than 65 to 75. That means the house needs to hold onto heat reasonably well. Cavity wall insulation, 250mm or more of loft insulation and double glazing are the usual baseline. Most post-1980 homes in Westhoughton tick those boxes or can be brought up to standard cheaply.
Older solid-wall terraces off Market Street or Wigan Road are harder. They can work, but you will usually need larger radiators throughout and possibly some internal wall insulation, which adds cost and disruption. Because the water is cooler, radiators need more surface area to give out the same heat. You will also need a hot water cylinder, normally 200 to 250 litres for a family home. If you currently have a combi boiler and no cylinder, finding space for one in an airing cupboard, garage or loft is one of the first things to sort out. The outdoor unit itself needs about a metre of clear space in front and is usually fixed to a wall or ground stand at the side or back of the house. Under permitted development it must sit at least a metre from the boundary, which can be a squeeze on tighter terraced plots.
A full air source heat pump installation in the Wigan and Bolton area, including cylinder, radiator changes and controls, typically lands between 10,000 and 15,000 pounds before any grant. Larger or older houses needing more radiator work can go higher. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme currently offers a 7,500 pound grant towards that, paid directly to the installer and taken off your invoice, provided the property has a valid EPC and the installer is MCS certified.
Running costs depend on your tariff and how well the system is designed. A well-installed heat pump should produce around three units of heat for every unit of electricity, which on a standard tariff makes it roughly comparable to mains gas. Heat pump specific tariffs with cheaper off-peak electricity can bring bills below gas. A poorly designed system running at high flow temperatures will cost noticeably more than your old boiler, which is why the design stage matters so much.
Expect a survey visit first, where every room is measured and the heat loss is calculated. That produces a radiator schedule and a heat pump size, generally 5 to 12 kW for homes round here. The installation itself takes two to five days depending on how many radiators are changing and whether a cylinder is being fitted from scratch. Your heating will be off for part of that time, so spring to autumn is the easier window.
Once it is running, the biggest change is how you use it. Heat pumps prefer to tick over steadily rather than being blasted on and off, so leaving the heating on at a lower setpoint for longer usually costs less than timed bursts. A good installer will set up weather compensation so the system automatically runs cooler in mild weather and warmer in a cold snap, and should walk you through the controls before leaving.
